10 Easy Environmentalist Costume Ideas For Any Occasion
Are you looking to have a green-themed Halloween costume? Maybe want to make a statement costume for a public demonstration?
We’ve got you covered – here are easy environmentalist costume Ideas that can raise awareness to current and worsening environmental issues.
Below we have given you a few great costume ideas that will surely be conversation starters at any event you go to (be it in person, or remote).
With all of these ideas, we (of course) suggest rummaging at a clothes swap, visiting your local thrift store or asking a friend for clothing supplies – don’t buy new for Halloween!
Greenwasher
Greenwashing refers to companies claiming that their products are environmentally friendly, when often they are not. See examples here.
For this costume, you could dress head to toe in green and attach labels to yourself that say things like, “Eco-friendly” and “Made from 3% recycled materials.”
Or!
Make a washing machine costume out of old cardboard boxes and paint it green! – No green paint? Ask a friend, post on your local online community groups.
Ocean Costume: Rising Sea Levels
… an increase in the level of the world’s oceans due to the effects of global warming.
Cut out several pieces of paper and write the word ‘Sea’ on them (or the letter C if you like a good pun), dress completely in blue, then attach the individual pieces of paper to your clothing beginning at the bottom of your pants, all the way to the top of your shirt. Make sure to have most of them concentrated around your neckline.
Use scrap paper that’s due for recycling!
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Sadly a relatively unknown issue outwith ‘green circles: ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ is sure to a conversation starter! Incase you don’t know, it’s a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. It’s a really great point to raise as it will naturally bring up plastic waste and the unnecessary purchasing of single-use products.
Dress in blue from head to toe, then safety pin plastic bottles, knives, forks, straws and
other garbage that can be found in the sea. Cut all of them and stick them all over your
outfit, with the majority of the cutouts concentrated in one area to create the garbage patch. A great combo of a Halloween costume and a Halloween craft in one for you crafty folks!

An Endangered Species
Sadly, there are too many to choose from. The WWF keeps an accurate, up-to-date list based on the severity of the endangerment for inspiration.
Easy to actualize costumes that suit this topic would be:
- Orangutan;
- Sunda Tiger;
- … or a Hawksbill Turtle.
If you do dress as an endangered species, bring 3 facts about the animal, and one way in which your party pals can help them.

Don't Forget the DIY Decor!
🦇 Pumpkins usually go to waste over the Halloween
season. Don’t contribute to the 17% of food that’s wasted globally each year (UN). Instead, decorate your porch with a series of old jars. Pop a tealight in your jars, then cut out spooky halloween shapes and faces to stick on the front.
🦇 Take white (or black, grey and orange) cleaning cloths and make little ghosts like the
above. This is a great waste free halloween craft and they’re super easy to make and a really fun family activity plus – no waste! (purplepumpkin blog pic.)
🦇 If you’re a fan of the macabre – Use old cardboard boxes to make gravestones. Paint punny names and dates on the front (The Simpsons are sure to provide you with great
inspo!), then rake leaves into mounds in front of them! If you want to be super fancy
Instructables has a fantastic blog here which shows you how to make 3d gravestones!
🦇 String up a giant cobweb (or two!) in your front windows. You can always use the yarn afterwards.
🦇 Paint some fall leaves with little bat eyes and fangs!
