Why taking climate action, together, matters.

Scientists and policy makers have framed climate change as a global problem requiring world-wide solutions on a political level.

Despite this, progress appears slow with bureaucratic gridlock often getting in the way.

You will have heard the saying that there’s ‘Strength in numbers.’

Why should this popular adage not apply to climate action on a small business and on a community level?

We’ve been working together since the dawn of human-kind:  We carry teamwork in our DNA, after all. Our forefathers did teamwork as hunter-gatherers for thousands of years.

Here are a few quick examples of effective climate action initiatives and outcomes that were propelled by the power of collective action – from individuals and businesses alike.

These successes are models of how we can reduce or adapt to climate change and the benefits of working together.

You can grow your business! There's a lot to learn from people in your respective sphere.

A great example of this is our business members Wholly Veggie.

They partnered with Outcast foods in the production of their line of ‘upcycled’ cauliflower products.

Through this partnership, Wholly Veggie take misfit, unsellable, or cast-off produce and turn it into a useable food product. Helping divert produce from waste!

This is a great example of two sustainable businesses leaning on one another for the sake of the environment.

You could effect political change: Tulsa residents help craft a disaster-resistant and sustainable community.

In 1974, victims of a major flood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, began organizing to pressure the city government to reduce flood damage.

Gradually the city improved its technical capabilities, organizational structure and funding for flood control.

After yet another major flood in 1984, the city banned development in floodplains and began relocating more than a thousand buildings away from them.

By 1992, Tulsa had earned the lowest flood insurance rates in the country.

With a federal planning grant in 1998, Tulsa Partners began creating public-private partnerships for the mitigation of other extreme events such as droughts, ice storms and tornadoes. Since then, the city has continued to make progress toward its long-term goal, a disaster-resistant and sustainable community. – Climate NASA

You'll gain emotional support: Climate activists find strength in numbers.

WWF gave their platform to two young Russian climate activists: Arshak Makichyan and Asya Fomina who are fighting respective eco-battles having seen the effects of climate change at their very front doors.

“Scientists tell us that permafrost across the North is thawing due to rising temperatures, releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases.

“My life has changed a lot since I became an activist, and it’s still changing. But what I know for sure is that I have a lot of like-minded friends, and together we can make a difference.”

“Because the climate crisis unites us. Only together can we find solutions to this global emergency.” – Makichyan

“What’s great is that I’m not alone. I’ve discovered that activism brings people together. We realize the only way to solve the climate crisis is by uniting—not only behind the science, but behind the friendship. Because when it comes to the global climate, there are no cities or countries. It is a borderless crisis. It is the biggest crisis the world has ever faced.” – Fomina
