How Workplaces Can Make Earth Month More Than Just a Month
Earth month focuses around drawing attention and encouraging us to take action for the planet during the month of April.
However, focusing on the environment for one month of the year is not enough.
Every year our window to limit the impacts of climate change lessens.
We need everyone to take meaningful action, and businesses are no exception.
Maybe you’ve taken the first step, observed earth month or even have implemented a few environmental policies. But it’s time to take things further and incorporate sustainability into every part of your business.
Here’s how to do it:
#1. Follow through with your sustainability pledges:
It’s easy to make general, distant promises to achieve your sustainability goals, such as reducing your carbon footprint by 50% in 2030.
But this isn’t all that revolutionary.
Consumers are increasingly critical and aware of greenwashing-when a company promotes itself as sustainable in order to attract more consumers.
Consumers are more likely to purchase from companies who are making tangible efforts to reduce their environmental impacts now, rather than company’s who are promising change in the distant future.
#2. Be transparent:
Sustainability can be implemented in every aspect of business from the supply chain to the marketing campaigns.
Consumers want brands who make it easy for them to understand their sustainability policies.
By increasing transparency, businesses can create meaningful change and help consumers make educated decisions about the brands they are buying from.
#3. Consider your social impacts as well as your environmental ones:
Sustainability includes environmental and social impacts.
You should be implementing social policies such as investing in underserved communities or implementing fair wages.
To achieve true sustainability you should be thinking about how your actions impact the global community.
#4. Push your workplace harder than you think you can go:
The impacts of climate change are being felt here and now.
There is no time to wait and no reason to delay implementing sustainability into every aspect of your company.
No matter what step of your sustainability journey you’re on, it’s time to challenge your brand to do more. Otherwise, real lasting impact won’t happen.
