Common excuses for why people don't take environmental action ...

Before we dig in, know that there’s no judgement here. Eco-anxiety is very real. So much so we dedicated a whole blog post to it (we’ve included a link to it at the foot of this blog entry).

When it comes to climate action, it’s absolutely understandable that you may freeze and not know where to turn, or what steps to take.

If any of the following excuses ring true for you, we might be able to help.

#1. I'm just one person. I won't make a difference.

The climate-sphere can be isolating.

You may feel like the tiny things you do don’t make a difference, or don’t count.

#2. Why should I?

It’s up to the big guys. The conglomerates, corporations and multi-million dollar companies.

#3. I'd feel like an outsider:

We all know that social settings can sway personal choices.

  • You might feel odd bringing veggie burgers to a bbq.
  • You may be embarrassed collecting garbage on a walk.
  • Your kid might not feel cool using an ice-cream tub for their lunch while everyone else has the latest Paw Patrol lunchbox (kids still like Paw Patrol … right?!).

Whatever it may be. We understand.

#4. It doesn't really effect me:

It’s easy to compartmentalize and push climate change and global warming to one side.

90% of North American’s time is spent indoors. It’s easy to see why there may be a disconnect between us and the great outdoors.

Your house hasn’t flooded. Your summers and winters remain stable. Your lakes are still fine for swimming.

Did any of these excuses sound familiar?

We know that you know that climate change is very real and very present.

To surmise: Our CEO wrote a blog post about the most recent IPCC report which you can see here:

“If we needed yet another reason to be even more convinced that we need to take action on climate change (now!!!), the 2022 IPCC Report has 18 chapters of information that can persuade anyone to take action.”

So what can be done here, today?

  1. Start small. Here at Random Acts of Green: Big or Small: We Embrace it All. Remember your tote on your next shopping trip or pick up a piece of litter from the sidewalk. We promise, that these small acts will make you feel great!
  2. Educate yourself. We have a great list of documentaries which you can see here.
  3. Get outdoors. Take deep breaths on your balcony or head to the park this weekend. Reconnect and see value in the great outdoors. Ignite the spark to save.

  4.  Don’t beat yourself up. It’s never too late to take action for the sake of our shared home.
