This month, we are hosting our special plant-based webinar, Taco-Bout Plant-Based Diets .

We are excited to bust some of the myths about plant-based eating and host a COOK-OFF with 4 of our esteemed Green Act Business Members – including La Dee Da Sauces, The Very Good Butchers, Sorry I’ve Got Plants, and Wholly Veggie.

To get to know our members a little better, we’ve asked La Dee Da to answer a few questions about their business!

What is your business called and what does it do?

La Dee Da Gourmet Sauces is a locally sourced, all natural, vegan, dairy-gluten free gourmet sauce company founded and created by three entrepreneurial women from Hamilton, Ontario. A few years ago the owners, Mary, Jo Anne and Marlow started this company because they saw a problem in the market place. There were no healthy convenient delicious plant based products with clean ingredients out there – so they decided to make their own.

How do you balance your work / family life?

Working for yourself, being your own ‘boss’ comes with many benefits as well as some trying obstacles.  Working from home especially….you have to be diligent with productivity in your regular hours of work.  It is very tempting to want to  do other things outside the focus of your business.  Dinner, laundry, taking the dogs for a walk, whatever it is, there has to be an invisible line between ‘home life’ and ‘work life’ even when you’re in the same house doing both.  Being an entrepreneur doesn’t end at 5:00pm for us, however, we try to keep a fine balance between work and home life by supporting each other as business partners and always having each others back if one needs to be away on a personal note.  That’s the beauty of partnerships!

What Green Acts is La Dee Da working on?

We saw a vision to take our glass jars and not just throw them in a landfill, but to clearly set out ideas for people to reuse them over and over again.

Here is what we’re doing:

  • We are a proud member with Random Acts of Green!
  • Our sauces are packed in a glass jar, with metal lids – no plastic, no waste.
  • We educate our customers that their line of sauces aren’t just for pasta, but in fact, meals in a jar!
  • We come up with new ideas on how to ‘reuse’ those jars, from holding crayons for children to using them as vases for fresh cut flowers.
  • Our co-packer uses an ecosystem where the water from the large 1000 litre metal drum steam jackets, gets recycled and reused for future batch cooking.
  • We support farmers allowing for business to business sustainability.

What is your favourite recipe to make with your product?

Well seeing how there are three of us as partners, I will say mine is the Cauliflower Alfredo Tagliatelle pasta with mixed vegetables….Marlow’s is the Butternut Squash Beet Sauce pizza she makes and Jo Anne is the Twelve Veggie Salsa dip.  Hard to pick just one recipe though as all our sauces are so very versatile and can be used for more than just pasta!

What advice would you give to people starting on a green journey?

Be true to yourself and your planet, we only have one shot at this and even though our generation may not see the greenest earth possible, we have to help build a foundation for the future generations that will walk the same paths that we have walked on.  Nature versus Nurture…Nature always wins, however, there is so much beauty in the world and right now with COVID-19 being this world wide pandemic, it is that much more important to be mindful that Mother Nature will always have the final say…how she gets there is up to us.

Where can people buy your products?

La Dee Da is in over 300+ retailers across Canada and we are proud to be a part of many local programs such as the Sobeys and Metro local programs, to name a few, that see companies like ours and give us every tool needed to become successful in their stores.  We adore each and every retailer who carries us and our team is always dropping in to say hello, check on inventory, see what the customers are saying and forge lasting relationships with the managers and staff.

Why is it important for people to switch to plant-based products?

For some this is an easy transition, for others it’s simply a question of getting some knowledge and support to start living this lifestyle.  Any gradual and small change will not only be good for us as humans but will help with keeping our planet greener and eco friendly so that many more generations can enjoy this beauty we call earth!

Thank you to La Dee Da for all your Green Acts and we can’t wait to hear you speak at our plant-based webinar on August 27th!
