Back to School Season is upon us!

This is a great opportunity to make green choices and involve our kids in the process.

Before heading to the mall for everything on your child’s School Supplies List, see if you can upcycle some old items you have around the house into items like notebooks, pencil cases and snack bags.

Here are our favourite ideas:

1. Upcycled Photo Frame

Upcycle an old hardcover book to create a cute and unique picture frame for your child’s yearly school photo! We love this tutorial from It’s Always Autumn.

2. DIY Lunch Bags

Two ideas: a Bento Lunch Bag by Smashed Peas and Carrots or a super simple Overalls Lunch Tote from Amanda Bowman.

3. Reusable Snack Bags

Ditch plastic snack bags this year and make these easy Reusable Snack Bags made with oil cloth from The Chic Site.

4. DIY Pencil Cases

pencil pouches

Use up some extra felt or other sturdy fabric with these DIY Pencil Cases from Lia Griffith.

5. Recycled Notebook

Recycled notebook

Who doesn’t have tons of leftover one-sided printer paper? (If you don’t, ask a local school or business!) Reuse them by making this Recycled Notebook by SAS Does.

6. No-Sew Reusable Fabric Folder

We love this No-Sew Reusable Fabric Folder (with video tutorial) from Makoccino. It can hold a notebook and other supplies like pencils, markers, and sticky notes! Use up some old fabric scraps and let your child decorate it!

Not into DIY? No problem. Hit up your local thrift store for school supplies before buying new, and look out for eco-friendly brands and materials when buying new is the only option.

What green choices are you making for Back to School this year?
