These local high school students are competing in an Envirothon!!

For the first time ever, the Peterborough/Kawartha/Northumberland Region has put together a local Envirothon event for high school students.

This was a partnership between Peterborough County Stewardship, Think Outside,  Fleming College, Sustainable Peterborough, City of Peterborough, County of Peterborough, East Central Farm Stewardship Collaborative, Forests Ontario and the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority. Because of these important groups, the local Envirothon competition came to life!

Since 1994 The Ontario Envirothon has been providing high school students with an outdoor learning experience (the BEST classroom!!), where they can learn about our natural environment, how to identify some environmental health issues, and how to fix these problems and reduce negative impacts.  It’s a team-based competition for high school students who love the outdoors!
Six groups of five students ventured out to complete workshops. The workshops  are designed to teach high school students important #green skills in aquatics, wildlife, forestry, and soil. Every year the Envirothon has a new theme, and this year it was sustainable agriculture. Entomo Farms and Harley Farms presented as speakers and Pat Learmonth gave an overarching view of Sustainable Agriculture.

The 4 eco- workstations were located on the beautiful Fleming College Sutherland Campus on the nature trails…..

And students traveled to the workshops where experts, including individuals from Otonabee Regional Conservation Authority,  the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Heritage Centre, the City of Peterborough, a graduate student from Trent University, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs were waiting to teach!

The workshops challenged students to complete certain tasks and provided the students with valuable environmental knowledge.
The students are competing for a spot in the regional competition and the winner will then be competing in the North American competition!
The Ontario Envirothon helps foster an appreciation for environmental sustainability and helps build the next generation of #green stewards and leaders right here in the Peterborough/Kawartha/Northumberland region.
Not only do the students learn critical environmental knowledge and grow essential team building skills, but they also get outside and have fun!
The Ontario Envirothon is a great event that fits perfectly into the Sustainable Peterborough Climate Change Action Plan, as it facilitates environmental awareness and youth engagement.
Events like these help educate future generations about the importance of maintaining healthy environments here at home.
Good work to ALL of the students who participated.
Your role in the preserving our environment is an important one!!!
